GALA
On September 9, 2023, starting at 6:00 p.m., TIME SHIFT GALA will take place, a public closing event of the International Scenography Program (September 1-10, 2023) at the Roman Castrum in Ovidiu.
During the Time Shift Gala, the public will be able to interact with the invited international artists and will also be able to view the installations made during the workshops of the International Program in Scenography. Besides all of this, there will also be a series of art works and installations specially invited to the Gala.
The event will be presented by Pavel Bartos and will end with a concert by the band ARTUDITORIUM by Sebastian Burneci – a musical program initiated by trumpeter and composer Sebastian Burneci, based on the idea of close collaboration between music and visual arts. The mission of the project is to create original musical, somewhere between jazz and contemporary music, dedicated or inspired by the visual arts, in art galleries or in unconventional spaces (Sebastian Burneci – trumpet/electronics, Paolo Profeti – alto saxophone, Sorin Romanescu – guitar/electronics , Olga Berar – violin, Flaviu Ludusan – clarinet).
CONTEXT
The International Program in Scenography is a ten-day intensive workshop in which emerging artists work with established professionals to create site-specific, multidisciplinary, performative art installations. The program develops an effervescent creative context for artists from different cultural backgrounds, who will work together to investigate the role of design and its expressive valences in the reinterpretation of local cultural heritage.
The theme chosen for this year’s edition of the International Program in Scenography is TIME SHIFT. BEFORE | AFTER (FALIE TEMPORALĂ. ÎNAINTE | DUPĂ), the theme inspired by Dionysius The Exiguul (ca. 470 – ca. 544), a monk from Scythia Minor who served in the early Christian basilica, the ruins of which can still be seen in the archaeological site of Ovidiu. Dionysius is the one who proposed the introduction of the year 0, Anno Domini (AD), thus dividing the chronology of history into Before and After. In a larger artistic context, the theme explores the concepts of transformation, rupture and polarization that we so often see around us.
GUESTS
This year, 21 participants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, the USA, Germany and Romania were selected in the program specializing in scenography, architecture, costume design, lighting design, sound design, media design, stage management and performing arts. They are joined by seven internationally renowned mentors: Jean-Guy Lecat (France), Nic Ularu (Romania/USA), Marina Raytchinova (Bulgaria), Bacchus Lee (Hong Kong), Billy Chan (Hong Kong), Viorica Petrovici ( Romania), Pawet Dobrzycki (Poland).
MOTIVATION
TIME SHIFT GALA is more than an event or a vernissage. It is meant to be an invitation to explore the space of the Roman Castle in Ovidiu, in an innovative artistic context, which challenges visitors to a dialogue between Past and Present, between History and Creation, between Classic and Modern. In a world where cultural borders are blurring, it is vital to create spaces and contexts where artists from different corners of the world can interact and enrich the local cultural heritage with new perspectives. And so, the old Roman Castrum takes on new meanings and becomes a vibrant scene for contemporary artistic expressions. Through this initiative, we aim not only to bring talented young artists to the fore, but also to reaffirm the importance of intercultural dialogue in a framework that simultaneously celebrates history and diversity. It is a truly unique opportunity to experience how the past and the present can coexist and amplify each other, in a universal artistic language. Therefore, we invite you to be part of this celebration of art and the global community, in a setting full of history and meanings.
We look forward to sharing this special artistic adventure together!
