ABOUT
In this three-day intensive workshop, we will investigate various relationships between the living body and the archival image.
Playing with choreographic, improvisational and curatorial tasks, we will first explore what our bodies tell us about our personal memories and histories; what happens if we perceive the moving body as a subjective and affective archive? What markings, scars, dents, and visuals do we project into the space around us? And what traces do we leave behind?
Secondly, we will look into the differences and commonalities between ‘moving’ and ‘static’ archives – what does it mean to bring an image ‘to life’? How can the body access a state of spatial and temporal immobility, an ‘eternal sleep’? What happens when we situate our bodies at the crossroad between movement and rest?
The workshop is part of a larger artistic project, “𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲” (concept Ioana Marinescu), that works with the relationship between body, memory and archive in various dislocated communities. We hope that this workshop will act as a foundation for future collaboration between the artists and the participants involved.
—————-
Hanna Gillgren is a Swedish-born choreographer and performer based in London, co-artistic director of H2DANCE, and a lecturer of dance practice and choreography at Roehampton University. A graduate of the London Contemporary Dance School, she has received awards for her own work and has collaborated with a number of other internationally acclaimed choreographers and dancers. She collaborated with Ioana Marinescu during an artistic residency in Beaconsfield, London, on the archival images of the ‘stone bodies’ from Pompeii.
Smaranda Găbudeanu is a dancer, choreographer and founder of PETEC. She began her formal education with studies in acting and puppetry and continued with contemporary dance and the exploration of various artistic fields. Along with participating in artistic productions on the stage of the National Dance Centre Bucharest and in various state and independent theatres, Smaranda developed an interest in visual arts and film that led her to master studies in Image Theory and Practice at CESI.
Iulia Mărăcine is a performer and co-founder of Ludic Collective. As a performer, she collaborates with artists from different art areas (visual art, choreography, film, theatre, music). Within the collective, she co-created and organised participatory performances, audiovisual installations, as well as somatic workshops, in various spaces (theatres, galleries, cultural institutions, schools) both locally and internationally.
